Parent-Child Project Structuring
Optimize Program Management, OKRs & Agile Execution

Structuring Your Projects, OKRs & Programs with a Parent-Child Framework Relationship
Managing large-scale initiatives, strategic programs, and goal-driven frameworks requires a structured approach often with a robust overarching governance framework. That's where Parent-Child relationships in Presto PDCA become invaluable. This feature enables users to organize related projects, OKRs, and initiatives under a single governance structure, ensuring that all workstreams remain aligned with overarching objectives. By implementing a hierarchical framework, teams can maintain clear accountability, track progress seamlessly, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure full visibility into the execution of key deliverables-all within a well-defined governance program.
This framework is particularly useful for:
Agile Project Management: A parent project such as "Build a New Website" can be established, with child projects (sprints) set up for incremental milestones like Landing Page Development, Contact Page Setup, and Pricing Page Design. This ensures that each sprint contributes to the broader goal while allowing teams to monitor individual progress, identify bottlenecks, and adjust priorities as needed.
OKR (Objectives & Key Results) Management: Users can structure their OKRs by setting the Objective as the Parent Project and linking Key Results as Child Projects. For example, an Objective such as "Improve Customer Engagement" can have linked Key Results like "Increase NPS by 10 Points," "Launch a Customer Loyalty Program," and "Reduce Support Ticket Response Time by 20%." This setup ensures that each Key Result is actively tracked, measured, and linked to the broader goal.
Program & Portfolio Management: Organizations managing multiple interconnected projects can leverage Program & Portfolio Management in Presto PDCA to establish a structured governance framework. This approach ensures that all related initiatives are strategically aligned, resources are optimized, and progress is tracked holistically. A parent program, such as a Digital Transformation Initiative, can oversee child projects like cloud migration, cybersecurity upgrades, and AI implementation, each contributing to broader organizational goals. By structuring projects in this way, teams gain full visibility into interdependencies, making it easier to adjust priorities, allocate resources, and drive impactful results.
Lean Six Sigma Initiatives: For organizations focused on Continuous Improvement (CI) and operational excellence, structuring Lean Six Sigma initiatives with a parent-child hierarchy ensures a data-driven approach to process optimization. The parent project represents the overarching initiative, while child projects follow the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) framework to target specific inefficiencies. A Manufacturing Optimization Initiative, for example, might oversee projects tackling waste reduction, cycle time improvements, and quality control enhancements. By structuring Lean Six Sigma projects in this way, organizations ensure standardized problem-solving, measurable impact, and continuous refinement of operational performance.
Establishing Parent-Child Project Structure in 2 Simple Steps
- Step 1. Set Up the Overarching Parent Project
- Step 2. Create Child Projects & Link Them to the Overarching Governance
Now, let's walk through the step-by-step guide below to see how easily you can implement this structure in Presto PDCA.
Step 1.
Set Up the Overarching Parent Project
1. From the project pop-up, click "Make this a ' Parent' Project"
2. Select the type of parent project. In this case, we are creating an agile project and this will be the overarching 'parent' project
Step 2
Creating A Child Project
From the Project Dashboard, open up a sub project (aka child project) to link to the previously designated parent project
3. Click "Project & OKRS" to open up the link panel
4. Select the parent project from the left menu
5. Assign the parent project by drag-n-drop
6. Click "Close"

BONUS
Reporting Parent-Child Projects
7. Click "Programmes & OKRs" menu
8. Select the project type
9. Select the project/program
10. Select report type
